Excerpt from Major General Andrew Atkinson Humphreys United States Volunteers: At Fredericksburg, Va, , December 13th, 1862 and Farmville, Va, , April 7th, 1865 Some explanation is due to those who will read these pages why the writer has written of one, who, though well known in his official capacity as an expert, is to many Americans comparatively unknown. Although untoward circumstances have prevented its appearance before, it at last takes form. It arose from some reflections cast (by the author of the History of the 2d Corps, Army of the Potomac) upon General Humphreys' Official Report of the part taken by the Division commanded by him at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 13, 1862. All correspondence with those having knowledge of the subject, was, in every case, submitted to the Historian of the 2d Corps. It is assumed that General Humphreys' abilities as a soldier would best be illustrated by their display on the field of battle, when in command of troops. Fredericksburg was his first opportunity, and it is deemed fitting to bring forward in connection with that, his last one also, at Farmville, Virginia, April 7, 1865. General Humphreys saw service as Chief of Topographical Engineers, Army of the Potomac, from March, 1862, until August of same year, under General G. B. McClellan. He was then given command of a Division of Pennsylvania Volunteers. This command was mustered out in May, 1863. He was then assigned to the command of a Division of the 3d Corps, formerly General Hooker's. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
