Michael is very unhappy. His parents were klled in a car accident that also left him unable to walk. A star soccer player, he cannot even watch a game because it only reminds him that he cannot play. Michael's grandfather takes him to Assateague Island where they see an energetic pony who grabs Michael's attention. The pony's parents are gone too, and though she is part of a special herd, she still feels lonely.
