Excerpt from Love Is of the Valley: An Old-Fashioned Story
It was quite a common story, such as one could read in the newspapers almost any day. Much of the suffering of the world, some of it irretrievable, arises out of common occurrences. There are certain qualities in the human race which, fine in themselves, need control and discipline, or they head for disaster. They provide a keen, sometimes an irresistible, temptation to the unscrupulous to trade on them.
Take, for instance, an inordinate ambition, a keen selfishness on the one hand, and a careless drifting, a beautiful but quite unpractical trust which almost amounts to shirking of responsibility on the other, and you are provided with the elements of a world tragedy.
These elements do not fuse, but they can be played off against one another, and they often are, by the unscrupulous.
The young make light of these great factors in human life, the old, standing by, watch the gradual unfolding of the film, often with dismay. Counsel or reproof do not avail, or but seldom, the human soul has to work out its own destiny, often in a great silence.
Beatrice Heron was not thinking of any such vital issues as she busied over a homely task in the attic room of one of those little old-fashioned, delectable houses which, though they may be overridden by the new kind, replete with every convenience, will never be ousted from the affections of those who are so fortunate as to possess and appreciate them.
This little house, appropriately called "The Outlook, " because it was perched on rising ground at a queer angle, and from its front windows commanded a magnificent prospect of sea and sky.
