Excerpt from Livy, Vol. 4: Edited for the Syndics of the University PressThe [ex Ca¿ulez'a (cc. 1 - 6 we must remember that where wmzéz'um did not exist between two sets of people, full and regular marriage could not be effected between two members of such sets. This, in effect, meant that the children of such a marriage succeeded to the position of the inferior parent only. The marriage was not quite in the modern sense illegal. The children were not what we should call illegitimate, provi ded the parents were free persons. The father held the same position towards them as he would have done if the marriage were an equal one. But the rule that children followed the rank of the father applied only where the father was plebeian. If a patrician married a plebeian woman, he forfeited all patrician rights for the children of such a union.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
