I went through it at once making a rough translation but little thinking it would ever be printed. In fact, the idea originated with those of my Japanese friends who went through the book with me. At first I was not inclined to adopt their suggestions, feeling as I do, that though the main facts of the story may be correct, the details cannot be so. The more I thought the matter over however, the more it seemed to me that the fact that it was a purely Japanese composition, giving a wonderful insight into Japanese ways of thought and action, would to some extent at least make Up for its shortcomings in other respects. On this account, I have striven to adhere as closely to the original as the exigencies of the English language would allow, and have retained many expressions, which under other circumstances I should have dropped.
