Excerpt from Life of Patrick A. Collins: With Some of His Most Notable Public Addresses
On the occasion of President Roosevelt's first tour of New England in 1902, he was entertained informally by Governor Crane during a brief stay in Boston. Mr. Collins, who was then mayor of the city, agreed to attend a small dinner party in his honor at a leading hotel, although he was suffering keenly from rheumatism at the time. He left the dining hall early and proceeded to his room. After his guests had separated for the evening, the governor with his customary kindliness called upon Mr. Collins to inquire after his health and comfort. Incidentally he and the mayor discussed the occurrences of the evening. What do you think of the President, Mr. Mayor, said the governor.
