Excerpt from Life of Edward Norris Kirk, D. DThe history of this book dates back to an October after noon, 1869. A strong and intimate friendship, formed in the five years of intercourse between the teacher and his stu dent, had left no observable barriers between us, and in a familiar conversation Dr. Kirk related, at that time, various experiences through which he had passed. When he had spoken without reserve of the part which under Providence he had been called to take in many stirring events, I made mention of the fact that, at his death, many would call for a history of his life.Whether he had ever thought of the suggestion previously is not known. The hour's conversation which followed re vealed at once the great modesty of the man, and a thank ful recognition of the part he had been permitted to take in the history of the American churches and of his country. He stated that there was nothing among his papers that could form any adequate basis for such a work but, said he, If by any course I shall be able to benefit my dear brethren in the ministry, when I can no longer counsel them by my voice, I will gladly do it.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
