The method is sometimes hard in manner and always fragmentary, but is less annoying to the reader than the obtrusion of a third person, and it has been adopted in trying to collect material intended not to give John Hay his place in history, but to preserve the features and figure of the man as he moved or talked or showed himself to his friends and to society.
