It is from the year 1778 (when one end of the chain which girt the island was loosened and com merce allowed to go the length of its links) that the history of Cuba essentially begins: the narrative of its infancy can only interest its natural relatives. Since the above mentioned year the germs of pro perity, with which it abounds, have begun to vegetate, but during the last eleven years the harvest has been ripening. Since that period the principal ports of the island have enjoyed a free commerce, and the effects of this the following details will exemplify.
