Excerpt from Le Cid: Trage¿die en Cinq ActesIn 1640 Corneille answered the charges of plagiafism which a clique of envious rivals levelled at him by the production of Horace, a tragedy in which everything, save the bare incident of the fight of the Horatii and Cmiatii, as related by Livy, is due to his own imagination. In the same year he silenced his critics au Cid persécuté Cinna doit sa naissance, as Boileau has it), by another work of genius: Cinna, ou la clémence dauguste. The triumph he then achieved was speedily followed by the production of another drama, Polyeucte tragédie chre tienne, as he himself styles it), which is considered by many to be his chef-d'oeuvre Le Menteur an excellent comic play, for the plot of which he is indebted, as in the case of the Cid, to a Spanish original, has won for Corneille the reputation of being the father of French comedy. In 1647 he was elected a member of that French Academy which at Richelieu's bidding had passed such a halting judgment on his Cid (see Introd. P. Xvii.)About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.comThis book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
