The triumph he then achieved was speedily followed by the production of another drama, Polyeucte tragédie chre tienne, as he himself styles it), which is considered by many to be his chef-d'oeuvre Le Menteur an excellent comic play, for the plot of which he is indebted, as in the case of the Cid, to a Spanish original, has won for Corneille the reputation of being the father of French comedy. In 1647 he was elected a member of that French Academy which at Richelieu's bidding had passed such a halting judgment on his Cid (see Introd. P.
