There is no question that as the refinement of problem composition continues, similar results will be achieved with smaller and smaller material, so that more and m-ore themes will be brought within the compass of the Knight and Bishop class. Take No. 33. The four mates here combined have been published under differ ent names innumerable times, certainly several hundred times. No. 33 was the first example with out a White Queen, but within the last three years, at least a dozen other renderings without a Queen have been published. This modern craze for the expression of ideas in their lowest terms and purest forms has its advantages as well as its drawbacks. The drawbacks are the many anaemic presentations of worn-out themes which no column or magazine has as yet shown the strength of mind to refuse its diagrams to.
