The Indians, with the double purpose of producing something which will be inter esting because it is unusual, and that can, at the same time, be applied in sup port oi the Mormon declaration that the American Indians are of Hebrew origin, that they once had the scriptures among them, and that they knew something of the Savior and His Gospel.The Book of Mormon tells us that the brass plates which Nephi obtained when he returned to Jerusalem contained among other records the first five books of the Bible - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.If Lehi and his descendants had the above record they must have understood the story of the creation of the earth, of our first parents, the fall of Adam and Eve, the Deluge and the building of the Tower of Babel. Although a great many years have passed since the In dians were sufficiently civilized to keep written records, we ought at least to be able to find some trace of this knowledge among them, provided they ever had it.
