Excerpt from John Carter of Providence, Rhode Island, July 21, 1745 August 19, 1814, and His Descendants: A Brief NarrativeIn September, 1767, after an apprenticeship with Benjamin Franklin, of Franklin Hall, printers in Philadelphia, John Carter moved to Providence, and became associated with the Providence Gazette, a weekly publication, at that time, and for many years after, the only paper in the town.
