Excerpt from Joan of Arc
Rouen, the chief notary by whom her answers were recorded, the friar who attended her on the scaffold, and many others present at her death. These depositions, embodied in the record of the second trial, exist in full. In addition to all this, there remain contemporary accounts of her in considerable number, some of them letters written from the camp, almost in the light of her presence. Surely there are few historic personages, of an epoch a little removed from our own, of whom there are materials of judging so abundant and trust worthy.
Strange to say, with all these means of arriving at the truth, the memory of Joan early passed into, and long remained in, the twilight region of uncertainty and fable.
