James Watt and the Steam Engine

Angebote / Angebote:

Excerpt from James Watt and the Steam Engine: The Memorial Volume Prepared for the Committee of the Watt Centenary Commemoration at Birmingham 1919The preparation of the material for the Memorial Volume was entrusted to the present Authors with wide discretionary powers and with sufficient funds to carry out the work. They take this Opportunity of thanking the Committee for their confidence and of stating that for the matter contained in the volume they take entire responsibility. They would add that its preparation has been to them a work of very great interest.James Watt was one of the few really great inventors who have been recognized as such during their lifetimes. Even to-day, over a hundred years after his death, his name is perhaps the best and most widely known among inventors. The object of the present work is not to glorify further the inventor, but rather to discuss critically the origin of the invention, the steps by which it was reduced to a practical form, and the development of the steam engine by him and under his direction, as well as the conditions and environment in which the development was effected. Accordingly it stops with the retirement of Watt from active business in the year 1800. From some points of View this is to be regretted, since the succeeding years up to the time of his death present features of much interest in the development of the steam engine, of mechanical engineering, and of the engine works at Soho.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
