This book is based on the three-part public television series, Inventing America: Conversations with the Founders. Blending humor with substance, the production was to bring our Founding Fathers back to life before a 21st century audience. While we imagined the conversations and presented them in the format of a television talk show, we based them on fact, using the Founders' actual words as much as possible. In the first four years after its premiere, the program reached more than sixteen million viewers. This book, intended as a companion to the television program, contains the complete scripts for the three episodes along with discussion questions and copies of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution of the United States. The scripts are designed for classroom reading and discussion and for live performances, or you may find a quiet place and read them for your own enjoyment. Either way, may you relive our country's formative years as our Founders lived them, see our country's future as they saw it, and come away with a renewed sense of what it means to be American. Author's Note: The conversations in this book are from letters, diaries, memoirs and other documents left by our Founding Fathers (see Source Notes). As such, I attempted to faithfully convey their words and ideas, not to mention their district personality traits, to a contemporary audience. But where I found the somewhat stilted, ornamental English of the 18 th century too awkward to render into everyday speech (try reading a letter of George Washington's out loud!), I endeavored to tune it to 21 st century ears.
