ANOTHER ADVENTURE Wise men have described Man as the clothes-wearing animal, the tool-using animal, the laughing animal but I heard one day in the street a description that went deeper than those of the wise men. A mother was addressing her small son from the door. You are a discontented little animal she declared. Thats whats the matter with you, She was nearer the truth than she realised. That is what is the matter with mankind generally. Willam Blake has pictured him only, as a morsel of unrest at the foot of a ladder, whose toy is amongst the stars. His cry goes out into ace l want I want , we took a long adventurous journey with men, women and children, from the dawn of civilisation to the times of the Roman Empire. We travelled with strange peoples, some of whom chose to do what they thought was right, some what they knew to be wrong. Many did not seem to care anything about right or wrong, but were out to win the best for thenselves, their families or their tribe or nation. Yet always, we found men and women who were earnestly seeking something higher and nobler than the common life they saw around them. The nations worshipped false and terrible gods, and it was only towards the end of our journey that we met with Jesus, the Son of the Father in Heaven. If we had told the story out of our heads, we should have said quite confidently that every one welcomed Jesus as Lord and Master but alas, the truth compels us to admit that this did not happen. Jesus was the great Surprise of Life, and though He was followed and loved devotedly by the few, He was despised and rejected by the many, and He died the slave-death of crucifixion. We learnt in Through the Bible that this crucifixion was no disgrace, but was His glory. For Jesus rose triumphantly from the dead, that He might live and reign in the hearts of men, women and children. How many of us end our prayers with the words For Jesus Christs sake, Amen. Four hundred years after the resurrection of Jesus, one of His followers, named Augustine, wrote Thou madest us for Thyself, and our heart is restless till it repose in Thee. In this book we are out to discover what these followers of Jesus thought and how they acted. Did they keep this strange and surprising news to themselves, or did they start out to tell all the world about Jesus Christ And what was this good news exactly....
