Excerpt from Influence of the Pre-Reformation Church on Scottish Place-NamesIn the following pages notice is taken of several less known missionaries, whether Columban or not, who, though they did not receive canonisation at Rome, were long held in affectionate remembrance, and were regarded as saints by the men of later times. When speaking of our early missionaries, Canon Isaac Taylor remarks: From the village names of Wales, Scotland, and Ireland it would be almost possible to compile a hagiology of these sainted men.2 Their names still cling to many a feature of our landscape. We find them on some wind-swept Hebridean island, or in some sheltered glen far inland through which ¿ows a stream telling of a long-departed saint. We find them on some headland, or hill, or at some spring whose water satisfied their thirst and supplied baptism to their converts.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
