Excerpt from In the World War, 1917, 1918, 1919: Cottonwood County, Minnesota
President Wilson demanded that Germany cease her unlawful attacks upon American shipping, but his righteous demands were met with evasion. Events moved fast, Germany paid no heed to the President's protests, and the United States Govern ment resolved to arm the American ships and to repel such attacks. This course proved useless, so war was the only alternative.
On April 6, 1917. Congress passed a resolution de claring that a state of war existed between the United States Government and the German Empire, and the President issued a proclamation calling the nation to arms. Volunteers were called to recruit the Army and Navy and the people were called upon to support the government in any emergency. Every loyal citizen was expected to do his duty. The government at Washington could not win the war alone. The call to service went out to' the remotest parts of the country and the response from all over the land brought with it the assurance of victory. Immediately upon the declaration of war, a call was made for the Army and Navy, the country heretofore always relying on this method of rais ing troops for the army. A great number of our patriotic men and boys responded to this call and were sent to the various camps and training schools which the government had established. When this call to service came the boys of Cottonwood County responded nobly by enlisting in the Army, Navy and Marine Corps.
