In theater, cultural specifics are performatively established in »contact zones« and through intersecting gazes of viewers and theater historians in the context of technological development (such as print, the press, television, the Internet). This book traces the cultural mobility of theater by analyzing the history of the Harlequin mask in France, Italy and Poland, as well as the history of the Pulcinella mask. Thus, it shows the way in which these masks participated in building »Italianness« in the eyes of foreign and local theater audiences. Due to its wide range of contextual fields and modern research methodologies, the book addresses students and researchers from the field of theater and performance studies, media studies, as well as cultural studies, constituting one of the best examples of transdisciplinary modern humanities.
