Excerpt from In English Verse: From the German of Richard Wagner
To Friends in Bayreuth.
"Nun danket Gott,
dass ihr berufen ihn zu horen!"
Parsifal.
You favoured few, from out a world of men,
Chosen to meet once more upon the ground
Where music then its utmost glory found
When Briinnhild built her pyre and, in the ken
Of Gods and mortals, gave the Rhine again
His ravished gold! I sit like one a-dream
And strain the soul of fancy till I seem
To reach your hearts, unhelped of speech or pen.
My blessing take, within the solemn halls
That rose to magic in its fulness near
Amphion's own what time the Theban walls
He built with stones that lent him living ear. -
But linger not! The Grail-King strumpet calls,
In strains, alas! I am not bid to hear.
