Immortality

This essay from philosopher Josiah Royce on immortality is based on a lecture given around the turn of the 20th century. Royce, an advocate of absolute idealism, argues that reality consists of one unified aspect, the Absolute. This Absolute functions as the spiritual, theological condition of all being. Royce attempts to convey a broader sense of what existing as an individual means accordingly, by situating each of us within the Absolute. Royce's interpretation of individual immortality emerges from this relation to an Absolute which is neither finite nor transient.
