Mr. Simpson, one of the best provincial lawyers of his day, was also a man of good literary taste and acquirements, and his apprentice imitated him in the latter rather than in the former character: Robertson's most intimate associate at that time was Mr. John Hill Burton, then also a law student in Aberdeen, and the friendship thus begun continued during life. It was in the latter period of his apprentice ship that I became acquainted with him, meeting him frequently during our leisure hours, which in those days were pretty ample.
