Excerpt from Illinois First Great Apple Show, 1918The illinois first great apple show and 63rd Annual Convention of the Illinois State Horticultural Society will be held at the Sherman Hotel in Chicago, Nov.'19, 20, 21, 22, 1918. For 63 years this Society, composed of volunteer mema bers, has stood in the front rank of Horticultural organizations in the United Statesifor the advancement in all Horticultural lines. Five conventions are held annually in the State, one by the Northern Illinois Horticultural Society in the Northern dis triet, one by the Central Illinois Horticultural Society in the Central district, one by the Southern Illinois Horticultural S0 ciety in the Southern district, a summer meeting by the State Society and the Annual Winter Convention.The illinois first great apple show is a de parture toward educating the general public in the Apple indus try of Illinois, together With the use of apples in the conservation program of the Government, and the necessity of apples as food in healthful living. Illinois is noted primarily as an agricul tural state and the fact that this state grows on an average of millions of barrels annually of high quality apples, equal in ¿avor and quality to the best produced in the United States and of the highest type in appearance, is not so generally known. There is probably no section of the United States Where orchard: ing is conducted With greater skill and'with more remuneration than in Illinois.
