Excerpt from I Like America Once upon a time, after I had finished delivering a lecture, you got up and said, in effect at least, "If you don't like this country, why don't you go back where you came from?" You may remember my reply. I said that, in the first place, I was born in America, and so were my ancestors for a good many generations. And, in the second place, I do like this country. As a matter of fact, you and I have a great deal in common. We both come from New England stock. We went to the same college. We both are married and have families. We both live in houses that we own. We both have incomes roughly sufficient for our needs. Neither of us has traveled widely, but we are both reasonably sure that we would not care to live in any country but the United States.
