Excerpt from History of Hartford, Vermont, July 4, 1761-April 4, 1889: The First Town on the New Hampshire Grants Chartered After the Close of the French WarThe labors of the author have been attended by much pleasure. Should any one ask: What is the pleasure to be found in such labor? The answer is, the pleasure arising from a sense of having performed a duty by conveying to those who shall come after us, precious remembrances of the lives and deeds of the noble men and women who laboriously and lovingly prepared for us such a heritage of popular rights and privileges, and of personal good in many forms, as none else on earth ever received from those who went before them. The author has had not the least expectation of pecuniary remuneration, nor of gain ing present or posthumous honor. It has been to him a labor of love, four years of patient labor during which time, for months in succession, he has given from ten to sixteen hours daily to the work.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
