Excerpt from Historical Discourse: A Sermon Relating to the Garden St. And Washington Square Reformed Dutch Churches of New YorkZechariah, iv 6. Not by might, nor by power but by my spirit, saith the Lord. The device of the corporate seal of the church on Washington Square is a stand, representing the golden candlestick of the Jewish Tabernacle. Instead, how ever, of the seven branches, it supports a bowl on the rim of which are seven lamps. On each side of the stand is a tree whose branches interlock, and over shadow the bowl. Underneath are the words selected as my text, By my spirit, saith the Lord.N 0 words can better describe this seal and show its import, than those of the inspired record. I looked, says the prophet, and, behold, a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof: and two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof. To the ques tion, what are these? The answer is, this is the word of the Lord saying, 'not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord.'About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
