Excerpt from Historical Discourse: Delivered on Occasion of the One Hundred and Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of the Congregational Church, and the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Sunday School, in Westminster, Mass, , September 9, 1868The setting up of memorials in commemoration of vic torious events, is a custom coeval with the history of man. The custom had its origin in a sense of gratitude, and in the case referred to in the text, of gratitude to Almighty God for a signal deliverance wrought by Him in behalf of the Israelites. In View of this victory Samuel erected a stone as an enduring and a grateful memorial to the glory of God, and for the encouragement of Israel. The reason for the name given, - Eben - ezer, Stone of help, - being, that hitherto the Lord had helped them. Notwithstanding the history of the past had not all been victory or success, yet in view of all God's mercies, and especially of the last deliverance, it seemed proper to memorialize the event, and thus to stir within the hearts of all Israel a sense of grati tude, and the constant recognition of the fact to succeeding generations, that God is the strength and portion of his people forever.Prompted by such sentiments and by such a spirit, we have met here to - day to erect our Stone of help, to set up a memorial that shall be a constant reminder to our chil dren's children, that Hitherto the Lord hath helped us.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
