Excerpt from Herodes Und MariamneChristian Friedrich Hebbel was born March 18, 1813, at Wesselburen, a small village of North Dit marsch in the Duchy of Holstein then belonging to Denmark. His father, Klaus Friedrich Hebbel, a mason by trade, was a poor day-laborer often out of employment. As proud as he was poor, embittered by failure, he became a sullen and silent man. In rsir, at the age of 22, he had married Antje Marga rete Schubart, a servant-girl two years his senior, of good disposition but of very violent temper. After losing through misplaced confidence their little home, they lived with another poor couple in a miserable hovel in such extreme poverty that both food and fire were often lacking. They had two children, both boys, of whom Friedrich was the elder. He inhet ited both the embittered pride of the father and the passionate temper of the mother.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
