Early in the year 1819 the elder F outane bought the Lion apothecary shop in the little Brandenburg town of neu-ruppin, and' there Theodor Fontane was born on December 30. F ontane spent his early boyhood in neu-ruppin, but the family removed in 1827 to the Baltic town of Swinemiinde Where the father had acquired the Stadtapotheke.
