For the sake of easy access and conformity to the various points dealt with in the exercises, the rules that apply have been stated in the first part of the book. Selection and grouping of the topics so treated have been wholly determined by practical considera tions. The more elementary features of German gram mar, such as declension and conjugation, have been entirely excluded.
