Nicholas can't stand his next-door neighbor, Mr. Robinson. Mr. Robinson gets mad about everything--when Nicholas's ball goes into his yard, when Nicholas's sister, Nina, has her radio on too loud, and especially when their dog Bitsy escapes and runs over to Mr. Robinson's yard and gets into his roses. Dad explains that Mr. Robinson is probably grumpy because he's sad about his wife being in a nursing home and because he has a lot of back trouble. But Nicholas doesn't care, at least not until he has a bad day of his own--then he's mean to his dad, his sister, and his dog. Maybe this is how Mr. Robinson feels most of the time. So Nicholas tries a new approach with Mr. Robinson, and learns that being a good neighbor can be its own reward.
