Excerpt from Geschichten Von Deutschen Städten, Vol. 2: Erzählt
Every observing teacher knows that the problem of how to stimulate the pupil's interest while he is wrestling with the mysteries of German grammar, and to create a new interest after he has emerged Victoriously from the combat, presents many difficulties. One way to solve this problem, and per haps the best way, is continually but gradually to acquaint the student from the very outset with the people and the minds of the people whose language he is studying. Fairy tales, desirable as they may be for certain objects, are in adequate for this purpose because they lack the necessary local color, and novels or classical dramas are too difficult for this grade, but stories which in tone and contents portray the local color, and which conduct the student systematically through the German Empire, will best serve to kindle and to sustain his enthusiasm.
