In 1818 the Georgia legislature enacted a law requiring free persons of color to register with the inferior court of the county of their residence. Registers survive for only 21 of Georgia's counties. Many registers include the names, ages, places of birth, residence, time of coming into the state, and occupation of each free person of color.
