Above all, I hope it will lead them not to accept as gospel the native teachers' ¿attering assurances that their pronunciation is quite correct, without being really satisfied that such is the case.In a few cases I have found it necessary to use symbols not Officially recognised by the International Phonetic Association. This is regrettable, but in the present disturbed state Of the world, and of Europe specially, I thought it better to sacrifice phonetic uni formity and use make-shifts, in order that the book might be produced at a moderate price.
