Excerpt from Frans HalsN 0 one can be more conscious than the author of the many shortcomings of this work. No one can be more disappointed than he that he has failed to find new and hoped-for light upon one or two problems of the painter's life, which remain yet for abler hands to exercise their industry upon. Here again he can but crave the sympathy of the reader. One word yet of personal apology. The author strove for some time to avoid the perpetual immodest appearance of the first person singular. It is said that the compositors who set up the type for Cellim s memoirs find that they are called upon to supply the letter I in wholly disproportionate quantity. Lest the printer should discover the like propensity in this volume, the author at first endeavoured to suppress the assertive capital as far as possible. But the endeavour had soon to be abandoned, and, to say nothing of the clumsiness of the other method, the reader will perhaps agree that it is after all more fair to him, and more just to the subject, that what are merely the author's personal views should not be put forth as if they were matters of general acceptance.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
