Excerpt from Francis Aquila Stout: New-York, 1894It was a practical interest that he hadas well. He wished to have a hand in them. I think that his long residence in France, where his interest in public matters was necessarily that of a looker on, had had the result of giving a spe cial zest to the interest he took in pub lic affairs at home. He knew France extremely well, was greatly interested in the affairs of that country, and indeed took a lively and intelligent interest in the course of affairs in Europe. During his foreign residence, however, I dare say that a man with so active a mind must have felt regret that his interest could only be that of a spectator. In this country, on the other hand, his feel ing seemed to be: Here is my coun try and city, here I am at home, and may take my part with others of my countrymen in movements relating to great affairs.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
