Während die Geschichte des DAI von einem kleinen privaten Gelehrtenverein in Rom zu einem Bundesinstitut mit umfassender Zuständigkeit für alle Bereiche der Archäologie und Zweigstellen in aller Welt bisher vor allem im Rahmen von Institutsjubiläen von Archäologen geschrieben wurde, widmet sich nun ein interdisziplinärer Forscherkreis, darunter auch Zeithistoriker und Wissenschaftshistoriker, diesem Thema. Die erste Arbeit aus diesem Cluster enthält vier Kapitel: Das erste handelt von Expansion und Nationalisierung des DAI im Kaiserreich und dem DAI und Archäologen im 1. Weltkrieg. Es folgt die Betrachtung des DAI in der Weimarer Republik unter Berücksichtigung von Außenpolitik und Kulturpolitik sowie Wiederaufbau der Abteilungen nach dem Kriege. Das dritte Kapitel beschäftigt sich mit DAI und Archäologie im Nationalsozialismus, wobei es z.B. um Außenpolitik, Kulturpolitik und Wirtschaftspolitik, Anpassung an den Nationalsozialismus und Durchsetzung seiner Maximen, den Anschluß des Österreichischen Archäologischen Instituts und den Zweiten Weltkrieg geht. Der letzte Teil befaßt sich mit Wiederaufbau und Umgang mit der Vergangenheit in der Nachkriegszeit und frühen Bundesrepublik. Hitherto the history of the German Archaeological Institute [DAI] from a small private club of scholars at Rome to a federal institute with comprehensive responsibility for all fields of archaeology and branch offices all over the world was mainly written by archaeologists in the context of anniversaries. Now this task has been delegated to an interdisciplinary circle of researchers, amongst them also experts of contemporary and intellectual history. This first product of the research cluster contains four chapters: The first one deals with the expansion and nationalisation of the DAI in the German Empire and the fate of the DAI and archaeologists in the First World War. This is followed by the history of the DAI in the Weimar Republic with special attention to foreign and cultural policy as well as the restoration of the branches after the Great War. The third chapter treats the DAI and archaeology in the Third Reich under aspects such as foreign, cultural, and economic politics, adaptation to national-socialism and its maxims, the annexation of the Austrian Archaeological Institute, and the Second World War. The final part considers reconstruction and attitude to the past in post-war Germany.
