Excerpt from Foreign Relations It is a common mistake, both of students as well as of authors of history, to regard the occurrences of a past age from the standpoint of the present century, and to weigh the conduct of the politicians of the old time by modern tests. Such a system only misleads the author and the reader. No one is able to realise, and couse quently no one is competent to describe, the circumstances of a century who has not succeeded in surrounding him self with the ideas which were prevalent at the time. And hence a novel may be often useful in supplementing the work of the historian. The novelist, in fact, repairs the omission which the historian often makes. The historian too frequently resuscitates the old characters, but he sur rounds them with modern circumstances. The novelist, on the contrary, clothes modern men and women in the old dresses. Neither writer is entirely accurate but the labours of the one to some extent supplement the re searches of the other.
