This book was written in October 1914, before the accounts from the theatre of war had thrown much light on those changes of method of which we are now beginning to hear in some detail. The most important of them is the influence of artillery in compelling the infantry to be content with a much shorter field of fire in front of its trenches than is desirable for obtaining the full effect of the modern bullet.
