Michael Douglas reprises his role as Gordon Gekko with Shia LaBeouf, Josh Brolin, Carey Mulligan, and Frank Langella also starring in the film. Set in New York, the film takes place 23 years after the original and revolves around the 2008 financial crisis. Its plot centers on a reformed Gekko acting an antihero rather than a villain, and follows his attempts to repair his relationship with his daughter Winnie, with the help of her fiancé, Jacob. In return, Gekko helps Jacob get revenge on the man he blames for his mentor's death. The screenplay was written by Allan Loeb and Stephen Schiff. Principal photography took place in New York between September and November 2009. After having its release date moved twice, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps was released theatrically worldwide on September 24, 2010, by 20th Century Fox. Despite opening to positive reception from critics at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, it was received mixed reviews from film critics, who generally praised the acting of the movie's cast. Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) is released from prison in October 2001 after serving over fourteen years for insider trading and securities fraud. Seven years later Jacob Moore (Shia LaBeouf) is awakened by his girlfriend, Winnie (Carey Mulligan). Jake turns on the television and watches an interview with Gekko promoting his new book Is Greed Good?. Winnie gets upset and turns the television off-she is Gekko's estranged daughter and blames him for her brother's suicide. Winnie leaves to fund-raise for her online political blog.
