Excerpt from Fifteenth Annual Report of the Board of Health of the State of New Jersey, and Report of the Bureau of Vital Statistics, 1891There can be no doubt that some persons are more resistful of dis use than others, that some stomachs better than others neutralize injurious substances, and that in the conservation of nature a kind of toleration of evils is sometimes established, but it would not do for all the children and invalids, or even all the well people, of a city to follow the example of Emmerich. There is abundant evidence that foal waters do disagree with many. What we know of the laws of life teach as that pure water and pure foods are favorable to health, and that impurities area tax nponvital force - a tax indeed often home without bankruptcy of health or life, but not in the interests of good health or long life. There is also abundant evidence that impure waters are the cnltnre-places for disease, and invite those spedfic forms of contagion which too often become epidemic.It is therefore important that we have means of estimating the comparative or actual purity of water used for drinking purposes.
