The reasons of its publication are as follows: It has often occurred to the mind of the author that most of the forms which have been prepared for family devotion are not sufficiently concise. He has, therefore, endeavored to study brevity in those now offered, so that those heads of families who are most busily engaged in the secular concerns of life, may not plead want of time as an excuse for omitting a most solemn and important duty. In passing over his present Diocesan field, as well as in his former parochial charges, he has often seen the need of some such manual as he has endeavored to prepare.
