I have felt particularly in preparing this volume the sensation which I have been told that many men feel in the progress of a busy literary life: the sight of a proof becomes odious to them. But while feeling this I have been so fortunate as to receive from Mr. T. Gambier Parry help, gratitude for which can be but faintly expressed: without it the task of seeing these essays passed through the press could not have been taken in hand.
