Excerpt from Erminia: A PoemThe catastmphe commemorated in this poem is taken from the Travels of the Rev. T. S. Hughes in Sicily, Greece, and Albania. The story (says he) was related to me by an aged and venerable Turk, whom I had frequently remarked on account of his long white beard, sitting at the entrance of the principal bath, of which he is proprietor. The only daughter of this person was a woman of exquisite beauty, but faithless to her marriage vows the im propriety of her conduct was frequently represented to her by her friends, but without avail, her incontinence became notorious, and a matter of public scandal: once more the dreadful consequence towhich such a course oflifewould inevitablylead were repre sented to her, butthis warningwas ine¿'ectual. Her fatherthen determined upon the last terrible expedient of obliterating so foul a stain upon the honour of his family. Accompanied by his own son, he entered the apartment of this unfortunate creature in the dead of night 3 the light of a solitary larup shewed them the oh ject of their visit, reposing in a calm and tranquil slumber, as beau tiful as an angel, and apparently as innocent, thebrother started back, and would have retreated, but was recalled by his father's stern command this incident awoke the unhappy criminal, who immediately foresaw their intent, and began to plead for mercy, she clasped the knees ofheraged parent, and implored his for giveness by the memory of her mother his beloved wife, but in vain, the fount of mercy was now closed 3 not a word either of pity or reproach was returned a she was thrown back upon the divan, and her last prayers for mercy were sti¿ed by her execu tioners under the cushions of the sofa.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
