Excerpt from English and French in England, 1066 1100The present study of the relations between the French and English peoples and tongues in England between 1066 and i'ioo is based upon a thesis presented to the faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Pennsylvania in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the doctorate in the year 1914. My original plan was to investigate the whole question of the relations between the two tongues in England during the entire Middle English period, but the stress of duties! In the Department of English has made it impossible to pursue the subject beyond the year I 100.
