Excerpt from Elements of Electro-Chemistry: Treated Experimentally
The researches in physical chemistry which have been prosecuted with great eagerness during the last two decades have led to results whereby many of the problems of exact science which had remained unsolved have been answered. For instance, a deeper insight has been obtained into the nature of solutions, by the work of van't Hoff, who has shown that the law of Avogadro, which had been applied only to gases, holds good also for substances in solution. This result has been of especial importance to electro-chemistry, although at first sight it appears to have no connection with that subject It may be affirmed to-day that the conduction of the galvanic current in electrolytes, as well as the origin of the current in galvanic cells, matters which had been discussed for a century, have been explained.
