Excerpt from El Buen Aviso Y PortacuentosThe imitative character of the Spanish miscellanies or jest-books of the Renascence can be readily explained by the lac1 that they were but an0ther expression of the large indebtedness of Spanish culture of the sixteenth cen tury, as, for example, of the fine Arts, and of poetry, to foreign models and sources, by the fact that in the realm of the short story there had appeared in Spain no single, original, creative talent of high rank, which could be taken as a better standard than the foreign novelists in vogue, by the fact, that, as a consequence of this state of affairs, it had not yet been sufficiently demons trated how the Spanish idiom could be perfected when intended for a succint and spirited narrative.
