This book deals with basic population processes - births, deaths, emigration and immigration - and puts them in an explicit spatial context. We can thus show how a number of fundamental problems about the abundance and distribution of organisms can be addressed. We also show how environmental variability may change the interpretation of population and community data. The main purpose of the book is therefore to bring together analytical population dynamics, random processes and community structure into a common framework.
