Excerpt from Drawing-Room Plays, Selected and Adapted From the French
This little book is intended to meet a want often felt - especially at Christmas-time - of short plays, unobjectionable in tone, easy to act, and requiring no elaborate costume or scenery. The following lines were written for the Authoress by a friend to whom she had expressed her regret that the language required was necessarily 'of the period.'
To the Reader.
My task has been a hard one - to express
French wit and sparkle in an English dress.
Forgive me, Reader, if your cultured taste
Think language 'of the period' misplaced:
'Pals, '' beastly, ' 'rotten, ' 'bosh, ' 'confound it, ' 'hang, '
Are, I admit, 'quite too too awful' slang,
And if you disapprove of ' won't' and ' can't, '
To the poor solecisms pardon grant.
We know, of course, professors do not teach
These little idioms of our Saxon speech,
But in the grown-up world, that larger school,
Such forms are not exceptions, but the rule:
So please remember that in '88
We English neither live, nor talk, in state,
And if, with this in mind, you like the plays,
My best reward will be - your honest praise.
